Dark Side of High Protein, Ketogenic Diets

Ketogenic diets are the latest diet fad that you've probably heard a great deal about. These diets rely on eliminating carbs to help you drop the weight. One can eat all the protein and fat they want.... but no carbs. They do work. But what you may not realize is that these diets have dark secrets that no one is telling you about.

Ketogenic diets get their name from the fact that they force the body to produce small fuel molecules called "ketones." When you eat a high-carb diet, your body burns glucose for fuel. Ketones are an alternative fuel for the body. When you don't have enough blood sugar (glucose), your body begins to burn fat. This is how you lose weight on these diets. You're basically reducing your blood sugar to the point where your body begins to burn fat.

The goal of ketogenic diets is to get your body into ketosis. This is essentially starvation mode. When your body goes into starvation mode, it begins to use its reserves for fuel. Those reserves are the excess fat you're carrying around. All of this sounds great. But here's the problem.

When your body goes into starvation mode, it's also in protection mode. It's essentially out of balance. The problem is when you stop eating the zero to very low-carb diet, your body wants to move back to balance. And when your body does so, it often bounces right back to where it was. What's worse, it sometimes goes even further just to make sure it doesn't go into starvation mode again. That means you not only gain back all the weight you lost, but you oftentimes will gain even more.

So the diet, which forces you to lose weight, also opens the door for you to gain weight in the long run.

Other risks of a high protein diet:
1. Increases risk of osteoporosis

2. Increases risk of constipation and colon cancer due to lack of fiber.

3. Increases risk of cancer in general due to acidic pH (urine).

4. Increases risk of kidney problems because protein breaks down and processes through the kidneys.

5. Many experience brain fog, depression, and lack of energy.

Obviously, ketones are an important part of the weight loss process. So wouldn't it be great to find a way to use ketones to lose weight without going into starvation mode? It sounds impossible, but it's not.

Yes, you have to cut out many carbs (all the unhealthy ones, especially sugar) to make this happen. But you also need to increase your nutrition. Keeping an abundance of nutrients in your diet tells your body that it's not starving. This means lots of veggies and perhaps chlorella for those who having a hard time keeping an alkaline pH (7.4 is perfect). But the greatly reduced blood sugar causes the body to produce ketones anyway. So you get the benefit of ketones without going into starvation mode. And you don't have to worry about gaining the weight back.

So you need to eat a diet that increases ketones without getting the body in ketosis. Like ketogenic diets, it causes your body to switch its fuel supply to run almost entirely on fat. It also reduces your insulin levels so they're very low and fat burning increases dramatically. However, you never go into ketosis. Because of the large number of vegetables and low-glycemic fruits you eat, your body never enters starvation mode.

That's not to say you can't gain weight if you return to your old eating habits. Eating a lot of sweets and carbs will return your body to burning glucose, not fat. And you will gain weight.
