Diindolylmethane (DIM) is a compound created when you digest cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli or Brussels sprouts.
Research suggests that DIM affects estrogen and other hormone levels in your body.
As a result, DIM supplements have been gaining popularity as a potential treatment for a variety of hormone-related conditions, including acne, menopause symptoms, prostate issues, and certain forms of cancer.
DIM can be effective in restoring normal production of estrogen in the body.
- Makes estrogen metabolize down the 2-hydroxy estrone pathway
- Frees up bound testosterone
- Acts as a natural aromatase inhibitor
- Aid menopause symptoms
- Increases energy
- Improves mood
- Reduces acne
- Possible weight loss aid
- Address hormone related cancers - prostate, breast, uterine, etc.
One of DIM’s primary effects involves the hormone estrogen.
Estrogen is important for both men and women, but too much of it can predispose to various cancers. For women, too much estrogen increases the risk for breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancers. For men, too much estrogen is believed to contribute to prostate cancer. And in both men and women, too much estrogen can cause moodiness, weight gain, fatigue, and a host of other undesirable symptoms.
How the body handles estrogen.
When estrogen is broken down by the body, it goes down one of two pathways. One pathway results in the formation of 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE1), and the other pathway results in the formation of 16 alpha-hydroxyestrone (16 alpha-OHE1). The ratio of these two is very important, because too much of the 16 alpha-hydroxyestrone has been shown to increase the risk of the aforementioned cancers. DIM promotes estrogen being converted into 2-hydroxyestrone, rather than 16 alpha-hydroxyestrone, and thus lowers cancer risk.
DIM Benefits Men and Women
Diindolylmethane is used for preventing breast, uterine, and colorectal cancer. It is also used to prevent an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hypertrophy, BPH) and treat premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
DIM is able to support free testosterone without changing total testosterone levels; it does not raise testosterone levels but supports its activity through its effects on estrogen metabolism. This helps to maintain a healthy level of free, active testosterone.
DIM and Weight loss
DIM has unique hormonal benefits. It supports the activity of enzymes that improve estrogen metabolism by increasing the levels of 2-hydroxyestrone, e.g. the “good” estrogen. When taken as part of a healthy diet, we have found that DIM helps support fat loss and healthy estrogen metabolism.
