As individuals age, they often need nutrient support for the mucosal membranes in the digestive system and throughout the body. One clinically studied and highly effective ingredient is sea buckthorn berry (Hippophae rhamnoides). The sea buckthorn berry is a source of over 200 important nutrients, including phytosterols, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and carotenoids, and beneficial omega fatty acids, including Omega-3, 6, 9 and the relatively rare Omega-7.

How it works: Omega fatty acids help support the structure of cell walls and tissue of the skin and throughout the body. However, most people don’t get a healthy balance of omega fatty acids through diet alone. Sea Buckthorn is an important addition to a patient’s regimen because of its impressive profile of omega fatty acids, including omega-3, 6, 9, and 7. For patients with gastric or any mucosal membrane concerns, omega 7 is especially beneficial because it preferentially supports mucous membrane regeneration and moisture.

Much of the sea buckthorn’s benefits have focused on its ability to support healthy levels of moisture and elasticity in the skin, due to its high content of omega fatty acids. For example, oils from sea buckthorn seeds and berries have traditionally been used in skin support in Russia and China, and clinical studies have shown that these nutrients help balance the omega-fatty acid levels in the skin. But gastric mucosa can benefit from the structural support provided by the nutrient profile in sea buckthorn as well. To investigate this, researchers conducted a scientific test, using an oral administration of CO2-extracted seed and pulp oils. The results showed a remarkable support of gastric mucosal health.*6 Additionally, clinical trials concerning adequate tissue moisture for mucosal membranes have shown similar results: the valuable components of sea buckthorn berries and seeds supported oral mucosa and mucosal tissue throughout the body.

Other research on sea buckthorn has found that it supports healthy moisture levels in the eyes, and that it assists in healthy skin tissue regeneration. Clinical trials have also shown that sea buckthorn supports vaginal tissue moisture/hydration in post-menopausal women.

Sea buckthorn (Hippophaerhamnoides) grows in Western Europe and Asia in areas where other plants can’t survive –near the ocean coastline where they are exposed to salty sea spray, and semi-aridareas that are too dry for most plants. This challenging environment may account for the richness of its nutrients. As a plant, it grows in a dense and thorny habit, and has medium-green elongated leaves. Somecompanies harvest the berries by cutting off the shrub, freezing the branches, and shaking out the berries. This is not a sustainable practice, however. The bushes are frequently destroyed and many do not regrow. Additionally, freezing can also damage or alter the key compounds in the berry. The sea buckthorn used in ProHydra-7 has been sustainably hand-harvested. While it is very labor intensive, it ensures that the plants survive to produce a crop year after year, and that the key compounds in the berry are intact. ProHydra-7 is also produced using a supercritical CO2 extraction method which yields high levels of the fatty acids without using harsh solvents.

Sea buckthorn has been used in Tibetan and Mongolian medicine for 1,000 years. The fruit of this plant has been called “nutrient bomb” because they are so rich in flavonoids, vitamins, and other beneficial compounds. The seeds contain exceptionally high omega fatty acids, including Omega-7 fatty acid (palmitoleic acid). In total, Sea Buckthorn contains over 200 essential compounds to support overall good health. Aside from its ability hydrate and nourish skin, sea buckthorn supports protects gastric mucosa-the lining of the stomach and intestines. It also promotes mucous membrane health throughout the body, which can be a health concern for everyone, but especially for women experiencing menopause.
