Dr. Beth's Homemade Bison Dog Food
Dr. Beth's Homemade Bison Dog Food
Servings: 12-16
I use a 6 quart crock pot:
  • 2 pounds ground raw bison (or grass-fed beef)
  • 1 cup (uncooked) barley
  • 1 cup (broken) wild rice
  • 2 cups chopped sweet potatoes (chop them well, dogs don't chew their food very well!!)
  • 2 cups chopped celery
  • 16 oz. beef broth
  • about 6 cups water
  • 1/8 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • can add/switch out other ingredients like cabbage, broccoli, lentils, crushed tomatoes, bell peppers or most greens (add towards the end) - great use for leftover greens... slightly wilted, etc.

Cook on low about 6 hours or high about 4 hours
Check it in an hour or so before the scheduled end cook time to see if it needs more water.

Cool well before serving... store in fridge... use as needed.

Serving size will depend upon the size of your dog...
KC (70 pounds) eats almost 2 cups, twice daily... but also gets snacks... fruits, vegetables, etc.
Our smaller dogs (about 11 and 16 pounds) eat about 1/3 cup twice daily.

I also make this recipe with Turkey, using 3 turkey thighs, and chicken broth instead of the beef broth.
