Servings: 12-16
I use a 6 quart crock pot:
  • 1.5 pounds ground raw bison (or grass-fed beef, turkey or chicken)
  • 1 and 1/2 cups to two cups (uncooked) barley or brown rice or some of each
  • 4 cups chopped sweet potatoes or butternut squash
  • 2 cups chopped celery or shredded zucchini
  • 16 oz. beef broth (or chicken)
  • about 6 cups water
  • 1/8 cup olive oil or coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • can add/switch out other ingredients like cabbage, broccoli, lentils, dried or frozen peas, crushed tomatoes, bell peppers or most greens (add towards the end) - great use for leftover greens... slightly wilted, etc.

Place all ingredients in crockpot.

Cook on low about 6 hours or high about 4 hours
Check it in an hour or so before the scheduled end cook time to see if it needs more water.

Remove and discard all bones before serving and storing.

Cool well before serving... store in fridge... use as needed.

Serving size will depend upon the size of your dog...
Amelia (45 pounds) eats about 1.5 cups, twice daily... but also gets snacks... fruits, vegetables, etc.
Our smaller dog Annie(about 16 pounds) eat about 1/2 cup twice daily.
For our two dogs, making a batch lasts about 6 days.

If you have smaller dogs, I suggest making a 1/2 batch instead of a full batch.

I often make this recipe with turkey, using 3 turkey thighs, or turkey breast and use chicken broth instead of the beef broth.

To use Chicken, I use 3-4 large breasts or 6-7 chicken thighs.
