Inflammation? Joint Pain? Boswellia to the Rescue!!!
Beth Ley Knotts, Ph.D. (Nutritionist)
Boswellia, also known as frankincense, is an herbal extract taken from the Boswellia serrata tree.

Boswellia has been a vital component of Ayurvedic practice for thousands of years. Modern research has confirmed the effectiveness of boswellia for healthy lung and bronchial function.

Boswellic Acids can affect signaling cascades that mediate critical immune system and inflammation functions, including improvement of joint comfort and mobility.

Boswellia may support balanced immune system responses to typical everyday challenges, thus helping to naturally maintain normal, healthy tissues.

Research shows that boswellic acid can prevent the formation of leukotrienes in the body. Leukotrienes are molecules that have been identified as a cause of inflammation. They also trigger asthma symptoms.

Four acids in boswellia contribute to the herb’s anti-inflammatory properties. These acids inhibit 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), an enzyme that produces leukotrienes. Acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) is thought to be the most powerful of the four boswellic acids. However, other research suggests other boswellic acids are responsible for the herb’s anti-inflammatory properties.

Excess levels of the enzyme 5-LOX set in motion inflammatory responses that have been linked to common effects in aging individuals.

It is difficult to manage the inflammation (and pain) associated with 5-LOX. So called "anti-inflammatory" agents such as Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen and Naproxen, etc. are ineffective on this type of inflammation. Boswellia is among the few treatments that blocks this 5-LOX pathway and help reduce the action of harmful enzymes that break down protective joint tissues.

Studies show that boswellia may reduce inflammation and may be useful in treating the following conditions:
  • Osteoarthritis (OA)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Asthma
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Painful menstruation
  • Weight loss
  • Also works as a diuretic

Because boswellia is such an effective anti-inflammatory agent, it can be an effective painkiller and may prevent the loss of cartilage. Some studies have found that it may even be useful in treating certain cancers, such as leukemia and breast cancer.

Boswellia and Weight loss
Boswellia serrata is a rich source of guggalsterones, which helps in stimulating the thyroid, leading to metabolic up-regulation, an increase in thyroid efficiency, increased caloric burn and therefore, possible weight loss.
